Reading the record
What to look at before you book.
- Operating authority. It should read active for the kind of freight you are moving, and the date tells you how long the carrier has held it. New authority is not a crime. It is a reason to call the number FMCSA has on file.
- Insurance filings. The insurer, the form (BMC-91 or 91X for liability), the amount and the effective date. General freight needs $750,000 in liability coverage; hazmat needs more.
- Safety rating and out of service rates. Compare the carrier's inspection results with the national average shown next to them.
- Fleet size. Power units and drivers. A two-truck carrier quoting ten loads a day deserves a second look.
- Who is writing to you. The record cannot tell you that. Most double brokering starts with a real carrier's MC number used by someone else.
